This question has been raised many times and a short answer for this is no, marijuana or cannabis is not legal in the UK.

In the Uk, marijuana is considered a class B drug and is prohibited for recreational use. In 2004 cannabis was moved to class C drugs which have fewer penalties however, in 2009 it was again added as a class B drug.

In the UK a class B drug is considered as a drug that is second most addictive and harmful for consumption.

The use of this is strictly prohibited under the law.

needs to be a preparation or product which contains cannabis, cannabis resin, cannabinol or a cannabinol derivative; it is produced for medicinal use in humans and; is a medicinal product, or a substance or preparation for use as an ingredient of, or in the production of an ingredient of, a medicinal product”

Is Marijuana Legal in The UK?

In November 2018 doctors in the UK were given a green signal to prescribe cannabis products like oils, ointments, etc to their patients.

In July 2019 a rule was established stating that NHS now is eligible to prescribe medicines whose base is some sort of cannabis derivative in case of Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. 

This rule was established after the trials that were done at London’s Great Ormond street hospital. Children who used to get multiple seizures a day showed some improvements after cannabis-based medicines were addressed to them.

In the same year NICE, the national institute for health and social care excellence issued guidelines for prescribing cannabis-based medicines to people having intractable nausea and vomiting, chronic pain, and severe treatment-resistant epilepsy.

It was found that cannabis or marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the Uk. 

It was used by 15.8 percent of adults aged between 16 to 59 years old.

The next popular and common drug was cocaine.

The number of people who want the legalization of cannabis is almost double form the number of people who are against cannabis. 

59% of people support the legalization of cannabis whereas 31 oppose it, but still the legal system of the UK bans cannabis.
